Abstract
The isomerization of maleic acid has been studied extensively both chemically and photochemically in solution. However, no literature exists on the photochemical solid-state transformation. Perhaps this is a result of the fact that traditionally solidstate reactions have had little attention due to their relatively slow rates and the lack of instrumentation and techniques to study compounds in the solid-state. With the development of solid-state chemistry over the past couple of decades and the emergence of new techniques such as solid-state NMR, x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy such a studies are now feasible. In addition to investigating the actual kinetics of the solid-state transformation using HPLC, the correlations between the rate of isomerization and the changes of other solid-state molecular properties such as solid-state NMR, solid-state IR and x-ray diffraction were studied.
