The Representation Gap in Politics: Explanations and Recommendations for Closing the Gender Gap in Michigan Democratic Politics

In my research, I examine the political landscape within the Democratic Party in Michigan, and try to explain through a review of the literature the reasons for the gender disparity in political representation. I hypothesize that socialization explanations can clarify reasons for gender differences in interest in running for office, and that discrimination in the political system can further explain the under-representation of women in elected office.
