Using historical analysis, this paper provides an outline of the relationship between rock music and politics over the last five decades. Research obtained from an independent voter mobilization project serves to support a first-hand account of the current political inactivity within the jam band community. Further, this paper examines strong elements of escapism and apathy prevalent within the jam band community and their effects on the potential for political mobilization. Research for Project S.U.A.V.E. was made possible by a Ham Fund grant.
