Abstract
State strength has traditionally been defined by its monopoly over force and legitimacy of its coercive institutions and organizations within a given territory and population. This Senior Individualized Project asks whether the privatization of the military challenges the United States' monopoly over force, what the rationale for its decision to privatize security is, and considers whether the U.S.'s decision strengthens or weakens state strength and sovereignty. Finally, the essay will look at the possible long-term consequences of utilizing the services of the private military industry in the United States.
