Abstract
A portrait of W. H. (William Henry) Smith, of the Kalamazoo College Class of 1871. Smith had fought in the Civil War prior to receiving his A. B. degree from the College. He went on to earn an M.A. (1873), a Ph.D. (Zoology, 1876), and an M.D. (1879), all from the University of Michigan. He was one of the first two students ever to earn a Ph.D. from Michigan. For some years, Smith published materials on herpetology, but he also worked as a physician in St. Clair, Michigan. The portrait was taken by C. C. Packard of Kalamazoo, who was active as a photographer from 1867 until 1898.
