The Influence of Funding on the Battered Women's Shelter Movement
Exploring the effects of funding agencies on battered women's shelters requires, first, an understanding of the historical aspects of the shelter movement. Then through a case study of a local shelter, I will show how the stipulations of funding agencies have altered the original goals of the battered women's movement. I have chosen a shelter associated with the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). While the YWCA did not begin within the women's movement, or as a battered women's shelter, the YWCA has become a principle shelter provider in the United States. This fact alone, speaks to the difficulty the original shelters faced in surviving while maintaining their ideology.
