Kalamazoo College Alumni Fair

A booth of college mementos for sale during a special summer homecoming at Kalamazoo College, July 30, 1960. This event, entitled "The Fair," was organized by the Kalamazoo College Alumni Association as a way to bring alumni back to town and campus. It was held during the annual National Junior and Boys' Tennis Tournament (now USTA Boys 18s & 16s National Championships), so that alumni could attend both. The fair itself consisted of a giant tent on the campus quadrangle, filled with sales of all kinds, plus a carousel, pony rides, silhouette artist, and Chinese calligrapher to entertain alumni families. Most of the materials for sale were made or donated by alumni, and the Association lobbied hard among the many overseas alumni for items to feature at the "Imports" booth. Some things, such as 1,000 pounds of cheese and Gwen Frostic stationery were sold on consignment from regional businesses. The fair brought in over $1,000 for the Alumni Association, and was held for a few more years in the early 1960s. The photographer is not identified.
