Abstract
A group of Kalamazoo College students in a classroom, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. This photograph is probably of the Preparatory Department or a mixed group of college and preparatory students. The College's Preparatory Department began in the mid-19th century and lasted until 1906; during the late 19th century enrollment was often double that of the College courses. A daily schedule of classwork can be seen on the chalkboard at the right of the photo. All of the courses (History, Latin, English, Algebra, Zoology, German, Stenography, Physics and Chemistry) were then taught in the Preparatory Department. Teachers listed include Miss Shaw, Miss Hanson, Miss Cook, Miss Whitney and Mr. Pitkin, likely the people standing at the back of the classroom. The photographer is not identified.
