    Prepping for Historical Pageant, 1933
    (Kalamazoo College, 1933-10)
In October of 1933, the college celebrated its centennial with a convocation, reunions, a historical pageant, and other events. According to the centennial program, the historical pageant “is designed to portray varying phases of the life of the College during the past century.” This image shows two women sitting on the campus quadrangle in front of a teepee, presumably preparing to represent the period from 1833 to 1843. One woman wears a headband, braided hair, and has a blanket with Native American designs wrapped around her shoulders. She powders her nose in a practice known as redface – the act of applying red-based make-up to achieve the appearance of an Indigenous person – while the other woman assists with her make-up. The hairstyle, accessories, and the teepee reflect stereotypical images commonly attached to Indigenous people.

    Kalamazoo College Centennial Performance
    (Kalamazoo College, 1933-10-13) Unknown
For Kalamazoo College's Centennial in October of 1933, one of the events was an historical reenactment on the campus quadrangle. Several actors (students and faculty) acted out five scenes in College history: the Primitive Era, the Stone Age, the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, and the Hoben era. This photograph was taken during the Stone Age scene, when actors portraying James and Lucinda Stone disembarked their horse-drawn carriage in front of Williams Hall to greet actors portraying College trustees. An article in the student newspaper "The Index" for October 14, 1933, explains the production in detail. The photographer and actors are not identified.
