The hundreds of delegates in attendance were primarily high school students from Michigan and the surrounding region. The Convention took place in the College's Tredway Gymnasium in 1952. The photographer is also not identified.Item Kalamazoo College Mock Democratic Convention, 1940(Kalamazoo College, 1940-03-16) UnknownA student delegate at Kalamazoo College's third Mock Democratic Convention, March 16, 1940. The student is not identified, but is possibly Kiyo Okami '40. His white ribbon signifies that he served as a state delegate chairman. At the 1940 convention, some 600 high school students were invited from high schools in Michigan and nearby states. The Mayor of Kalamazoo gave a welcoming address, and the keynote speech was given by Kalamazoo College junior Jack Montgomery. One of the highlights of the 1940 convention was the loss of power during the evening balloting session. The nomination went to Cordell Hull. Although this photograph is not dated, Paul McNutt was one of the candidates for the Democratic nomination in 1940. The photographer is not identified.Item Kalamazoo College Mock Democratic Convention, 1932(Kalamazoo College, 1932-03-19) UnknownThe first Kalamazoo College Mock Democratic Convention, 1932. An article in the student paper "The Index" on February 5 of that year stated that "Red hot oratory, nominational parades, and all the noise, hilarity, and tenseness of a genuine convention will fill the nominating hall." Some 400 delegates, most from regional high schools, and over 1,500 guests were expected to fill the College's Tredway Gymnasium on the afternoon of March 19, 1932. President Hoben gave the opening address, and Kalamazoo's mayor presented a key to the city to the convention chairman. Balloting was held in the evening session, and the nomination went to Newton D. Baker of Ohio. The photographer is not identified.Item Kalamazoo College Mock Democratic Convention, 1968(Kalamazoo College, 1968-04-20) UnknownStudent delegates at Kalamazoo College's ninth consecutive Mock Democratic Convention, 1968. In that year, primary elections were held in the College dormitories, with each dorm serving as a state. At the mock convention, 391 high school students from 46 area schools, and 137 Kalamazoo College students chosen to serve as delegate chairpersons made up the crowds. The keynote address was given by Michigan Congressman William D. Ford, and the nomination went to Eugene McCarthy. The students and photographer are not identified.
